• no more than 1/3rd of all branches at a time
• full prune
• All branches down to 2-3 nodes per branch
• flowers will take time
• but, plant will be nice
• hard prune
• rejuvenate the plant
• old plant, lot of dead wood

The main idea is to prune just before a warming trend is coming, so that your hibiscus will grow very actively, and the increasing warmth will pull them forward into lush new growth.
