I feel like something inside of me just went off. This usually does happen when I see Roger Federer go down in a match. I didn't see this one, but to see the 6-4, 7-6 score for James Blake against Federer was enough to bring a lull of sadness. Federer, he who has never lost to this opponent in the 8 times that they had played before Beijing, was ousted. Nadal at the french, Nadal at Wimbledon, the rising Brit - Andy Murray, Karlovic, and now James Blake have all been able to get the better of him.
Why does it hurt a little? Is it the thought they have him figured out or the realization that like all good things, this too must come to an end. What perhaps intensifies the feeling is that when you admire someone in sports, its usually because you see yourself in them or at least you want to. And when you see pretty much anyone can knock him out now, you know that someday you too wont be as good as you once were.

o its an indication that it's about time he got a real coach and not coach himself.
Yeah, that thought came to me too and then he did get one for the French Open.
One could argue he should. But then things have seemed to work his way for over 4 years. May be its a slump or may be the exit is a few doors down.
Come September and I hope we see something different.
It broke my heart at the French Open, and especially at Wimbledon to see Federer go down like that. Fed winning Wimbledon is the essence of all that is good in this world, and neither the Nadal-underdog theory nor the Federer burning out one, does anything to assuage the hopelessness of it all. You trust that the sun will shine, the birds will sing, and the Fed will win, and when that doesnt happen, it just feels a little sad.
Anyway, we hope.
